Thanks so much for passing along the word of Klug's demise. He was a splendid specimen, and the love which he and Brent - and he and James - and he and you - had was deep and palpable even to those of us who didn't know him well. This must leave a huge hole in Brent's heart, as well as yours and James'.
Sounds like he suffered from the same problems at the end which Stonewall did. Stonewall's last illness (if you can call it that) was paralysis of his hind end. The paralysis rapidly (over the course of 2-3 days) spread up his spine. When he could no longer even roll over onto his sternum, we had no alternative but to take him in for euthanasia. His spirit was still strong, but I didn't have the strength to support all his weight so he could get up to relieve himself, and the situation was clearly frightening to him. We spent his last night curled side by side on the floor in the family room, where I could reassure him when he awoke from his sleep, alarmed. Klug had a wonderful life with you guys. He would be the envy of my dogs, if they but knew. Walks on the beach, long drives with the top down, adventures galore, regular baths to keep him sexy for the girls, treats from dads who are gourmet cooks, and the best veterinary care available. I hope that in time Brent will find another (canine!) companion who has some of Klug's terrific qualities. Although none could take his place, the gifts these guys give us exceeds anything we could ever give them. All my best to all of you. *with tears in my eyes*

IN AWE OF DAWG
A simple case of canine sublime? Another lovable mutt by the sea? Ah! But just no mere dog, he. His name, in truth, was Klug, With an affectionate -ie.
Deep brown eyes a-blinkin, Ears floppin like cabbage leaves. Hed welcome all to the room With a stank to make ya swoon And paws bigger than Frisbees.
I want dat ball! the silly man say, But Klugd snarl, chomp, snap it away. It was all a game, a power play -- Until a hand raised toward snout Inspired a growl that rendered doubt.
Benign and sentient, furry and dark, Klug made Venice his very own park. The neighbor dogs could never rate Da seismic wake of dis Dawgs gait. (And God forbid theyd try to mate!)
Copilot, companion, soulmate, friend -- Klug was cool and prideful to the end. The beach may seem more vacant, The fabled Walk a bit less alive. Yet Klugies spirit will always thrive.
With Eternal Nuzzle Love, Dean Lamanna 9/10/06

I was very sorry to hear of Klug's death. It came as such a surprise. I have fond memories of him. He always managed to greet me with a wet lick. Just when I thought I had managed to avoid it, he would slyly walk by and lick me. He didn't pause at all and just kept walking. I think we will all continue to smile when we remember him.

Stella just told us about Shash, we are so sorry for your loss. We met you at Stella's dinner party, but were not fortunate enough to have known Shash. Shash is in our thoughts.

Mine is a very special story about Klug, the gentle giant that could'nt seem to keep his nose out of Nougatine's fuzzy (yet danty) butt. Nougatine (14) had a spleenectomy and partial gastroectomy to remove a large mass in her spleen and 2 smaller masses in her stomach at ASEC on August 23, 2006 which as I learned today was the day before we lost our big buddy Klug. What's important to know is that I often thought of ,and spoke of Klug during these difficult times. I would tell my family and friends of this huge dog, beyond his years, that looked as if he was done for a year or more ago and who came back like gangbusters after a surgery despite being nearly as old as my Nougat. Everything was benign and Nougy is recovering nicely. The last time we saw Klug Nougatine took a rare interest and returned Klug's final butt sniff and when I pet him, he looked me straight in the eyes. I can't tell you how much having seen Klug come through his surgery like that comforted me and gave me strength during our recent ordeal. What a guy. I'll miss seeing him on our walks but I know he'll be out there in spirit.Rock on big boo.....

When i first met Klug, i was a little taken back to say the least... i had never seen such a big Shash! He barked at me at the front door to protect his immediate family. But before you knew it, i was part of the family and soon he had a ball in his mouth and the endless tosses of the ball began.
I would occasionally take a friends dog to the beach just to walk with Klug and Anthony, and looking back i sure regret i had done it more often. The sight of that big Shash jumpin' up to drink from the water fountain was a sight to behold, not to mention the look of envy in the other dogs eyes.
He may physically be some place else now, but his spirit will always be with all of us... forerver.
What a big Shash you ARE!

Klug (aka, the big shash) touched more people in his full life than many humans do. (He also traveled a lot better than most people ever do.) The devotion and love of the humans who shared the Shash's beach house (and you shared it with him, not the other way around) was special to witness.
If there is a heaven, I hope that is chock full of cabbage hearts and pigs' ears. He would like it that way.
And, I hope that he meets my little shash up there and that they become good friends.
As always, chapso.

He big guy, you were one of the first ones I met when I first arrived in Venice. You were indeed a quite fella, but gave me the occasional courtesy bark when I ran oafter a skate board. Bernhard and I saw the note about you on a tree the other night and were of course saddend by your passing over the rainbow bridge. You told me last time I saw you that you felt the end coming. But when it happens it is always unexpected. I know you are now in a place of abundance. Loads of treats and bones. And the humans up there have all the time to play with you. I really hope I won't see you for at least 15 or 16 years, but when I come up, I will look you up for sure. Wait for me my frined! Woooohooooffff Your Elmo

I am so happy to have been able to share time with Klug and grew to love him deeply when he stayed with me. He was truly a remarkable dog - even my father who met him just once briefly kept asking about him. It was clear his quality of life was beginning to suffer in his old age and I'm glad he passed on as gently and painlessly as he did, in a sleep. In fact my dad's dog passed away a few weeks ago too, and I now picture them running about together in doggie heaven, a plethora of dogs bottoms to sniff, pigs ears and biscuits to chew and fields to roam.

I recognize Shash as a neighbor. My Chihuahua and I walk at least twice a day on the boardwalk and would frequently run into Klug. He was truly a gentle giant and had unwavering tolerance for my energetic little girl who barks at other dogs every chance she gets... I am so sorry for your loss.

This is very well done and I love the photo! It's hard to summarize the life of an ICON, but I think you captured a good piece of it. Hope you're doing OK -- I know it's hard. I've always thought that the best way to carry on is by treasuring all the wonderful memories of good times with those who were near and dear to us, and you certainly have an abundance of great memories to dwell on!

Ya know I have heard thatif you get another dog and do it within a short period of time Shash's spirit will become a part of the new pet's life and exhibit his character, therefore never really leaving.....
Look about every once in a while and I bet you will catch a glimpse of him lumbering about......in other words he will always be near you and never far away :-)
